Picking the Right Musical

If you are a director or producer and are looking to put on a show, you already know that you are in for a lot of work. Rehearsing, performing, and executing a production may be one of the most time and labor intensive things out there. There are so many variables to figure out on the logistics end that many people give up before they even pick a musical to perform. However, say that you have gotten past that point. Say that you have figured out where you can rehearse. Say that you’ve figured out who can make your set and do your costumes. Say you even have a venue for the production (by the way, congratulations on making it this far. this is a huge accomplishment). Now it is time for you to pick what musical you are going to do. There are plenty of great ones out there, and we know that there is a lot of pressure to make sure you’re doing the one that is best for you. However, don’t worry. One of the things that people always deliberate about is whether or not to perform a classic. We think that classics are usually a good idea because they are familiar to a most of the audience. However, one of the risks that you run when performing a classic is that people who have already seen the musical can be very critical of it.
